My 2 cents on some new patterns..

Okay I am just going to assume that some of the Big 4 pattern companies are working understaffed. I get so excited when Adrienne sends me an email saying new patterns are out -- and then all hope is lost when I see the selection. It isn't helping my lack of sewing mojo lately. Okay so here is my take on the good, the bad, and the what where they thinking?

First up I have to say that McCall's for me had more hits than misses!

Isn't this a neat and fashion forward little ditty. There are so many possibilities with this pattern.

*I call a time out on the further production any shirt patter like this.. I can count about 5-7 of them. The featured shirt should have been the aqua colored one at the upper left. Is is new and very pretty for fall.

I love this swing jacket for fall/winter! It is similar to some of the others already out but the bands at the sleeves make it fresh.

I heart this jacket because it sings to my inner Gordon Gartrell! The quirkiness of the lapels are great -- although I would modify mine to make that left collar lower (the shorter one).

Oh I think is SO cute. I am not feeling their busy plaid example but the red and black examples are very chic!

Simplicity -- if I see that purple dress pattern ONE MORE TIME!

Simplicity I think I am tired of this one too (although I am still on tap to make one. LOL) McCall's did it already -- let's switch it up people!

For the sake of sounding like a broken record -- can the Project Runway series actually look like something that would be on an actual runway?? Sometimes it feels like their back to school line. Which would be great -- if I were 12.

I really hope someone proves me wrong -- but this is one ugly blouse. At least in the black and white version here. She is ready to attend the 1980s church banquet.

Now this could be really cute in a black and white version. Sort of a play on a tuxedo shirt and high waist skirt in the version to the far left. I have my eye on this one!

Okay that is it. I am done being overly critical now... :)

I was hoping you didn't like those Simplicity blouses!!! ;-) Pretty awful. My favorites are the McCall DIY Stye Jackets and the McCall dress (the last picture). Hopefully you'll get your sewing groove back soon.

I agree! I was thinking about doing the same post. Some of these patterns are atrocious. And, unfortunately, McCall's didn't do it for me at all! I was so disappointed when I saw what they had to offer. I am tired of the ugly '80s styles, the jumpers, and the formless dresses. And Sew Stylish disappointed me with their non-pattern of hats, bags, vests. Maybe I'm just not a vest girl, but, ugh! And honestly, I've never been a fan of the Project Runway collection. They do look like they're aimed at teens. I just don't relate! LOL!

I'm feeling you on the wanna-be remix version of those patterns. Let's be original. However, I do like that the first pattern, the DIY Style. Had it not been for SATC, I probably would have passed it by. It's just like the top Miranda had on when she was on the Brooklyn Bridge. Now, to find a jacket like that and I'll be all set!

oh I definitely agree! That first DIY Style one was the only one I liked at all from the new batch of Big 4 patterns. Luckily, my addiction to BWOF and KnipMode and Burda Style means the Big 4 are becoming less relevant by the day...

I'm really loving the Hillary Duff ones, especially the last dress since I've seen every great designer do their own version for the season. And I love the DIY pattern, cute and fashion forward at the same time. I'm meh about everything else since it seems its all been done before by the same companies.

I love the church banquet comment! *LOL* Ummmm, this may be why I am sooooo fascinated with vintage patterns right now. The pattern company offerings are..too simple...too young...too blah...too overdone...too NOT deserving of any more of my hard earned cash!

Club BMV is having a private sale today and I can't find a SINGLE pattern that I want to buy!

I totally agree with everything you wrote! Your comments, along with a post this week from Two on Two Off have me leaning toward making that first BWOF purchase!

I agree about the 80's shirt. Ugly. Not too many things to grab my interest here at all. Personally, I've made more BWOF and Vogue than anything else in recent years.

seriously funny!
the person that makes that shirt work should go on project runway.
I love that swing jacket, I will be looking out for RTW versions to get some ideas, that may be ON ME this fall,, good post!

I feel like all of the pattern companies had one big meeting and agreed on what to make. It is really bad when the customers at Hancock Fabrics start complaining. I wonder if the companies start designing more detailed and intricate things , will the prices skyrocket like those of Vogue patterns.By the way, I have tagged you to get to know more about you if you have not already been tagged.

I almost bought that blouse pattern yesterday. I wasn't drawn to the one the model is wearing but the sleeveless one. However, when I pulled the pattern from the Simplicity drawer, I decided that I really, really did not like that blouse.
