The initial celebrations and opening ceremony have been done and dusted. What comes next with the slew of Confederations Cup 2009 live matches will also be the huge expectations that weigh on the shoulders of some of the participating teams, such as Brazil, Spain, Italy and South Africa. These teams are not only expected to do well overall, but also to win the honours at stake. Brazil and Spain are the reigning champions not only in their region, but also in the eyes of their own fans. The South Americans, in particular, must always win in style and comprehensive fashion, else a mob of angry fans will await them at the airport instead of joyous celebrations on the streets of Rio de Janeiro. Spain have most recently had intense and over the top celebrations when they triumphed over the whole of Europe, but that could also be quickly forgotten if they finish with a whimper in the Confederations Cup.
One might think that being the current World champions would carry with it great anticipation, but Italy’s critics and fans are not holding their breaths this time. They know that their favourite team is still in transition from moving out a group of experienced but aging players, while bringing in and searching for new talents that are capable of performing at the top of the international game. Unfortunately, the latter is not quite happening yet and there will be plenty of sleepless nights ahead for manager Marcello Lippi, who was brought in to save the national team from further humiliation under previous incumbent Roberto Donadoni. However, that might be nothing compared to what awaits Joel Santana if South Africa does not reach the semi finals of the Confederations Cup. Not only will the fans of Bafana Bafana want to taste glory in their own country, but their Football Association will hope for some returns from their investment at this level. While others might feel that they need a dose of reality, there is much potential with the South Africans and some proper management and organisation could eventually bring out the best in them.
